Description |
|
The Argentine ant also known as worker ants
or black ants is a dark ant native to northern
Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and southern
Brazil. It is an invasive species that has been
established in many Mediterranean climate areas,
including the United States. |
|
Biology/Habitat |
|
Argentine ants are a common household pest,
often entering structures in search of food or
water (particularly during dry or hot weather),
or to escape flooded nests during periods of
heavy rainfall. The worker ants are about (0.12
in) long and can easily squeeze through cracks
and holes no more than (0.039 in) in size.
Queens are two to four times the length of
workers. These ants will set up quarters in the
ground, in cracks in wall voids, and in spaces
between boards and timbers. Outdoors, they will
generally nest in soil or landscaped areas. The
also will invade the abandoned nests of other
ant species. |

Prevention Tips |
|
• Place all fruit, vegetables, breads, and
condiments in the refrigerator or freezer.
• Seal or repair all cracks and crevices as they
are excellent nesting and breeding sites.
• Eliminate all water sources, including leaks,
puddles and flooded areas.
• Remove dead insects/animals. |
