Description |
|
The Norway rat (also known as the common
rat, sewer rat, Hanover rat, Brown rat,
Norwegian rat, or Sewer rat) is one of the most
common and well known rats. The Norway rat is a
true omnivore and will consume virtually
anything. It has preference for meat, however.
It is a brown or gray rodent with a body up to
10 inches long, and a similar tail length. The
Norway rat can be found wherever humans reside,
particularly in urban areas. |
|
Biology/Habitat |
|
The Norway rat is usually active at night
and is a good swimmer, both on the surface and
underwater. It is a poor climber, however.
Norway rats are known to burrow, often forming
extensive burrow systems. Norway rats generally
do not travel beyond 65 ft of their nest, if a
suitable food supply is available. They will
travel more widely where food availability is
limited. Norway rats prefer damp environments
such as river banks and sewage systems. |

• Eliminate all food sources such as pet
food and fallen fruit.
• Eliminate all water sources, including leaks,
puddles and flooded areas.
• Keep bushes thinned out, as they are an
excellent source of harborage.
• Eliminate all holes and other points of entry.
• Repair torn or broken screens, and vents.
• Ensure that all garbage cans have tightly
sealed lids. |
