House Flies

The housefly (also house fly, house-fly or common housefly), is the most common of all flies found in homes and one of the most widely known insects in the world. They can transmit serious diseases. The adults are 8–12 mm long. The housefly generally has a gray thorax, dark lines on their back and a yellow abdomen. Their whole body is covered with hair-like projections. The females are larger than the males, and have a larger space between their red compound eyes.
Houseflies use their own saliva to predigest solid foods prior to consumption. They also regurgitate partially digested matter prior to final consumption. Houseflies will consume a large variety of foods, including sweets, oils and decomposed matter. Houseflies can walk on vertical planes, as well as upside-down. Houseflies have quick reflexes and are quick flyers, which help to ensure their survival. Houseflies have a preference for and reproduce more rapidly in warmer, more humid climates. During the winter, flies survive in the larval or the pupal stage usually in a warm and protected nesting site.
Prevention Tips
• Clean and sterilize areas where flies are found. Steam clean if necessary.
• Thoroughly sweep and mop.
• Have drains properly treated for decomposed matter.
• Thoroughly seal and clean all bottles since many bottles contain fly-attracting liquids.
• Place all fruit, vegetables, breads, and condiments in the refrigerator or freezer.
• Seal or repair all cracks and crevices as they are excellent nesting and breeding sites.
• Eliminate all water sources, including leaks, puddles and flooded areas.
