Description |
|
Honey bees are insects that are primarily
distinguished by the production and storage of
honey and the construction of nests from wax.
Honey is made when the nectar and sweet deposits
from plants and trees are gathered, modified and
stored in the honeycomb by the bees as a food
source for the colony. Honey bees are floral
visitors, and will pollinate a large variety of
plants. Honey bees have been used extensively
for commercial pollination of crops and other
plants. |

Biology/Habitat |
|
All honey bees live in colonies where the
worker bees will sting intruders as a form of
defense, and alarmed bees will release a
pheromone that stimulates the attack response in
other bees. Upon stinging, the stinger and venom
sac are separated from the bee’s body. This
stinging apparatus is capable of continuous
delivery of venom even though it is detached.
Unfortunately, the worker bee dies after the
stinger is separated from its body. |
