Description |
|
The German cockroach (also known as the
Croton bug or Steam fly) is a small species of
cockroach, measuring about half of an inch long.
It can be any shade from tan to brown to almost
black and generally has two dark parallel
streaks -“racing stripes”- running from the head
to the base of the wings. Although it has wings,
it generally does not fly. It is one of the most
common and prominent household cockroaches in
the world and can be found throughout most
populated areas. The German cockroach is known
for its ability to reproduce very rapidly and is
often found in homes, restaurants, food
processing facilities, hotels, and nursing
homes. In colder climates, they are usually
found only near human habitats, since they are
not very tolerant of cold weather. This
cockroach is usually active at night, but can be
seen in the daytime if disturbed or allowed to
reproduce. |

Biology/Habitat |
|
The German cockroach is omnivorous and a
scavenger. They particularly like starch, sugary
foods, grease and meats. In certain situations
where there is a shortage of food, they may eat
household items such as soap, glue and
toothpaste. They may even become cannibalistic,
chewing off the wings and legs of their own
species. Because they are smaller than other
species of cockroaches, they are very effective
in invading cracks and crevices to evade humans. |

Prevention Tips |
|
• Eliminate all food sources; such as
decontaminated food and grease.
• Keep storage areas neat and sanitary.
• Eliminate all holes and other points of entry.
• Seal or repair all cracks and crevices as they
are excellent nesting and breeding sites.
• Eliminate all water sources, including leaks,
puddles and flooded areas.
• Ensure that all garbage cans have a tightly
sealed lid. |
