Description |
|
The Daddy Long-legs or cellar spider is a
spider of the family Pholcidae. Females have a
body length of about 9 mm. Males are slightly
smaller. Its legs are about 5 or 6 times the
length of its body (reaching up to 7 cm of leg
span in females). It commonly inhabits the
ceilings of rooms, caves, garages or cellars. |

Biology/Habitat |
|
An urban legend states that they are the
most venomous spiders in the world. Recent
research, however, has shown that while the
spider’s fangs are capable of penetrating human
skin, the venom has a relatively weak effect on
insects. Also in humans a daddy long legs spider
bite generally produces only a mild burning
feeling for a few seconds. Daddy Long-legs has
the habit of shaking its web violently when
disturbed. This is probably to blur the vision
of a predator. They can easily catch and eat
other small spiders, mosquitoes, and other
insects. When food is scarce, they will prey on
their own kind. Because they originally came
from the tropics, these spiders do not seem to
be aware of seasonal changes and breed at any
time of the year. |

Prevention Tips |
|
• Use gloves when gardening; handling
firewood, etc.
• Eliminate as much clutter as possible in
storage areas and frequently dust and vacuum
around windows, corners
of rooms, and under
furniture.
• Trim weeds around the building foundation and
remove debris to discourage insects and spiders
from living next to or around a structure.
• Seal openings and install screens and door
sweeps to prevent spiders (as well as other
unwanted pests) from moving indoors. |
