Description |
|
The brown recluse spider or violin spider,
is a well-known pest in the western united
states. It is usually between 1/4 in and 3/4 in, but
may grow larger. It is generally any shade from
brown to a deep yellow color and usually has
markings on its underside. The markings look
similar to a violin with the neck of the violin
pointing towards its rear. These markings have
also lead to the nicknames fiddleback spider,
brown fiddler or violin spider. |

Biology/Habitat |
|
Recluse spiders build irregular webs in
woodpiles, sheds, closets, beds, garages,
cellars and other places that are dry and
generally undisturbed. They seem to favor
cardboard in human residences, possibly because
it mimics the rotting tree bark which they
inhabit naturally. They also tend to be found in
shoes, inside dressers, in stacks of clothes,
behind baseboards, behind pictures and near
furnaces. The common source of human-recluse
contact is during the cleaning of these spaces,
when their isolated spaces are suddenly
disturbed and the spider feels threatened. As
indicated by its name, this spider is not
aggressive. Actual brown recluse bites are rare.
The spider usually bites only when pressed
against the skin, such as when tangled up within
clothes, bath towels, or in bedding. |

Prevention Tips |
|
• Use gloves when gardening; handling
firewood, etc.
• Eliminate as much clutter as possible in
storage areas and frequently dust and vacuum
around windows, corners
of rooms, and under
furniture.
• Trim weeds around the building foundation and
remove debris to discourage insects and spiders
from living next
to or around a structure.
• Seal openings and install screens and door
sweeps to prevent spiders (as well as other
unwanted pests) from
moving indoors. |
