Description |
|
The Black Widow, or the Western black widow
spider or Western widow, is a highly venomous
spider species found in western regions of the
United States of America. The female's body is
14–16 millimeters in length and is black, often
with an hourglass shaped red mark on the lower
abdomen. The male species is around half of this
size and generally is tan with light striping on
the abdomen. |
|
Biology/Habitat |
|
The black widow spider is most common in the
Southern areas of the United States. Black widow
spiders can be found around wood piles, and are
frequently encountered when homeowners carry
firewood into the house. Webs are usually built
near the ground normally in trash, rubble piles,
under or around houses, sheds and garages. They
can be found under eaves, in storage bins,
underneath unused construction materials, inside
wooden toy boxes, firewood boxes, outdoor
toilets and sheds, meter boxes, and other
undisturbed places. Black widow spiders can also
be found on the underside of ledges, rocks,
plants or debris and wherever a web can be
strung. Cold weather and drought may drive these
spiders into buildings. |

Prevention Tips |
|
• Use gloves when gardening; handling
firewood, etc.
• Eliminate as much clutter as possible in
storage areas and frequently dust and vacuum
around windows, corners
of rooms, and under
furniture.
• Trim weeds around the building foundation and
remove debris to discourage insects and spiders
from living next
to or around a structure.
• Seal openings and install screens and door
sweeps to prevent spiders (as well as other
unwanted pests) from
moving indoors. |
