has been introduced to virtually every area of
the world including Europe and the United
States. |

Biology/Habitat |
|
Pharaoh ants have become a serious nuisance
in hospitals, rest homes, apartments, hotels,
grocery stores, and other establishments. They
feed on a wide variety of foods including
jellies, honey, shortening, peanut butter, corn
syrup, fruit juices, baked goods, soft drinks,
greases. In some instances, they will also feed
on dead insects and even shoe polish. Also,
these ants gnaw holes in silk, rayon and rubber
goods. In hospitals, ants have been found in
surgical wounds, glucose solutions, sealed packs
of sterile dressing, soft drinks, and drinking
fountains. These ants are capable of
transmitting diseases and contaminating sterile
materials. |
