Description |
|
The American cockroach, (also known as the
Palmetto Bug or Waterbug), particularly in the
southern United States, is the largest species
of common cockroach. It is native to the
Southern United States, and common in tropical
climates. Its intolerance of cold weather limits
its presence to more highly populated areas in
colder climates. |
|
Biology/Habitat |
|
Adult American cockroaches grow to an
average length of 1.5 inches. They are different
shades of brown and have a yellowish margin
behind the head. Immature cockroaches resemble
adults except that they are wingless. They are
scavengers that feed on decaying organic matter
and a variety of other foods. This cockroach has
a preference for decomposed or fermented foods.
They can travel quickly, often darting out of
sight when someone enters a room. They are also
capable of fitting into small cracks and under
doors despite their large size. They generally
live in moist areas, but can survive in dry
areas if they have access to water. In
residential areas, these cockroaches live in
basements and sewers, but may move outdoors
during warm weather. They are also common in
crawl spaces, cracks and crevices of porches,
foundations, and walkways adjacent to buildings.
The American cockroach is capable of flight. |
