Description |
|
Africanized honey bees (AHB), also known as
"killer bees" or Africanized bees, are hybrids
of the african honey bee. These bees are very
aggressive, and originally escaped from the
scientists who had tried to contain them. They
are known to invade European Honeybee hives by
peaceful means. They then take over the colony
by killing the queen and establishing their own
queen. |

Biology/Habitat |
|
The native African bees are smaller, and
build smaller comb cells than the European bee.
The Africanized bees are larger although they do
have slightly shorter wings. Africanized bees
are characterized by greater defensiveness in
established hives than European honey bees. They
are more likely to attack a perceived threat and
to do so relentlessly in larger numbers. This
defensiveness has earned them the nickname
"killer bees". The venom of an Africanized bee
is no more potent than that of a normal honey
bee. However since they tend to sting in much
greater numbers, the number of deaths resulting
from their attacks is greater than those that
arise from the European honey bee. |
